Physical Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety is often felt physically. Sometimes our bodies let us know we are anxious even before we recognize our anxious thinking. Some common physical symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Rapid heartbeat: Anxiety often triggers the body’s “fight or flight” response, causing the heart to beat faster.
  • Shallow breathing or hyperventilation: Breathing may become rapid and shallow during periods of heightened anxiety.
  • Muscle tension: Anxiety can cause muscle tension, leading to tightness or discomfort in various parts of the body, such as the neck, shoulders, or back.
  • Sweating: Excessive sweating, particularly in the palms, forehead, or underarms, can occur during anxious episodes.
  • Trembling or shaking: Anxiety may cause trembling or shaking in the hands, legs, or other parts of the body.
  • Digestive issues: Many people experience digestive symptoms during periods of anxiety, such as stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness: Anxiety can cause feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness, sometimes leading to faintness.
  • Fatigue: Chronic anxiety can be draining and exhausting, leading to feelings of fatigue or weakness.
  • Difficulty concentrating: Anxiety can impair concentration and focus, making it challenging to complete tasks or think clearly.
  • Restlessness or agitation: People experiencing anxiety may feel restless or agitated, finding it difficult to sit still or relax.

Experiencing these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have an anxiety disorder but it could be if symptoms like these are significantly interfering with your daily functioning.
